Question:

Is there a name for being afraid of what people think about you?

I do things VERY carefully in front of some people as to not embarrass myself in any way, and I am not outgoing at all in school unless I am near good friends. I am so self-contained to the point that if I act even a little outgoing, it would be weird (at least that is what I think; I think I know what people think about me.)

Is there a name for this "condition" so I can research it, or, do you have any advice to help it get better?

  1. generally speaking it is called "social anxiety".

  2. If this fear cause you significant distress and is a hinderance to you living your life, you may suffer from social anxiety or avoidant personality disorder.  Maybe you should see a mental health professional.

  3. Social Anxiety

  4. Self conscious.

  5. The closest thing that I can think of is "Xenophobia" - intense or irrational dislike or fear of people who are foreign.

  6. Yes it's called being insecure. One of the things that will help you in this area is realizing that every one of us have more than enough negative information, that if weren't behind closed doors, would ruin us. The person that judges you does it to ease the pain of their own mistakes, faults, and lack of purpose in life. In some form or another, it gives them a twisted pleasure to see you go what they go through. I say don't give in and stand your ground. If you can lay your head down on the pillow at night, satisfied, happy, and proud of who you are and what you have accomplished, not even people and their negativity can stop you. Take control and good luck.

  7. Low Self Esteem

  8. Avoidant personality disorder?

  9. being human
