Like if you say, " I think we need to tighten our border security."

They would say, "What??? You want to start paying $20 for a head of lettuce??"

If you say, "I'm against the government profiling its citizens."

They'd say, "You like it when 12 year old little girls get kidnapped and murdered."

If you say, "I'm for moderate controls on firearms."

They'd say, "Oh, you want us to be invaded by Mexico? Because that's what will happen."

Is there a specific name for that kind of rhetoric? I was thinking "fear mongering" but that's not quite right? You know....people whose argument jumps to the most extreme result of you action.

  1. I'm not sure of the name of this particular rhetoric, but I did notice that every response to your statement was an "invalid argument". Check out the link below for a whole list of them.

  2. Rhetorics of Display

  3. My 13 year old says it's Spazmoronification.   I have no idea what that means.

I know what you mean...it's sort of a chicken little thing, the sky is falling no matter what you say.  I will take some wisdom from your info though...and be on the look out for terrorists the next time I make a salad.  LOL

  4. SDD is right. :D

  5. Officially it is hyperbole.

  6. We will have plenty of citizens growing and picking lettuce when the results of all the deficit spending in congress comes home to roost. You are standing on the beach chatting while the tsunami is just over the horizon. Congress is only waiting for the election to tell everybody they are broke and the dollar is busted.

You will not be worried about the intricasies of cheap farm labor from Mexico when the congress stops the money machine and everybody finally understands what is happening. Congress is trying to stall, delay, hide and obfuscate until the election. The tsunami of debt will take your job and make gasoline and bread too expensive to buy. Only the lucky elite minority will weather this tidal wave. Just sit on the beach and split hairs over trivia.
