I would like to know more about the 2 to 4-story residential houses that one can see around London, characterised by a garden and a lower attachment at the back and bay windows on the front. In particular, I would like to know if this type has a distinct name, so that I could do further research, and the original function of the attached building. Please follow this link for an aerial view of such houses to the north of Finsbury Park: http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTCP&cp=skx69cgzr556&style=b&lvl=2&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&scene=12446357&phx=0&phy=0&phscl=1&encType=1

Thanks!

  1. Terrast

  2. they are normal semi detached house the out houses are extensions to fit more tennants into

  3. I used to live in Finsbury Park and I know that most of the properties in that area are Victorian.  The ones on your link are Victorian Terraced properties.  Many of them had outside toilet facilities and tin baths were used in front of the fire in the kitchen as there was little or no plumbing when they were originally built.  The two storey houses would have been used by the average working family.  The four storey ones would more than likely have been for the more upper class families.  With the ground floor being for the working staff, 1st and second floors were family accommodation and the top floor may have been the sleeping quarters for the maids etc.  I hope this helps.

  4. these are called terraced houses,

when you have a row all joined together.

some have alley ways between them.

  5. They look like typical terraces - some of them I think might be Corbett style but I don't think they all are.

  6. From what I can see from the link, there appears to be a mix of terraced and semi-detached houses of the  Victorian or Edwardian era. Very typical of much of English housing of the time. Good luck with your enquiries, and it might help to get a book  published by the Haynes group, called The Victorian House Manual. Lots of interesting details of their construction.Am sorry to say, I cannot remember the author .
