I'm wondering what they do with them, or if they are available on e-bay.

They are called halter name plates. I have them for my horses. Almost all thoroughbred horses have them, and wear them in the barn or for getting their baths, etc. In some of the Big Breeding Farms they have to have them to identify each horse. Click the above link. You can buy them for any horse. Hope this helps

  2. I think you mean on the halter - and they're called halter name plates - I've never seen one on a race horses bridle.  In racing you want lightweight equipment.  They typically have the horses name or if it's a sales horse, its breeding engraved.  Sometimes we keep them for posterity - if the horse is special - or otherwise we just reuse the halter on another horse.  Once you put one on the halter has holes in the leather that show if you try to remove it.  If you're looking just to have a name plate made, you can check with any engraver and especially with a TB sales company for info on how to order them.  I suppose you might see a halter that was worn by a famous horse on eBay occasionally(?)
