Is there a national registry for names of businesses?

I'm on the board for a technology firm. We have decided to go ahead with a new start-up. It falls upon me to do some research on new name ideas. I know I can "Google" each name but I was curious if there was a national database with every registered business name.

Don't know where you are from but in the uk we have Companies House where you can register your company's name, if you are not from the uk maybe find out your governments equivalent?
