  1. There is no such bridge.

Anti (Indian) Government politicians have instigated the

Hindu fanatics that there is a bridge in between Rameswaram & Talai-Mannar (Sri Lanka)built by Sri Rama..

Sri Rama is a Vaishnavite Hindu deity considered as

    an incarnation of Mahavishnu.

In fact Rama is the hero of Valmiki's Ramayana, which is an

    epic.

There was a ferry service of Souhern Raiway in between Dhanushkodi & Talai Mannar some 30 years back.

As the sea washed away Dhanushkodi, there had been

no ferry service to Sri Lanka.thereafter.

The water level is not deep enough for any ocean going vessels to navigate through.

Please read the following for further information.

Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project proposes linking the Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar between India and Sri Lanka by creating a shipping channel through the shallow sea sometimes called Setu Samudram, and through the island chain of Rama's Bridge, also known as Adam's Bridge. This would provide a continuous navigable sea route around the Indian Peninsula. The project involves digging a 44.9 nautical mile (83 km) long deepwater channel linking the shallow water of the Palk Strait with the Gulf of Mannar. Conceived as early as 1860 by Alfred Dundas Taylor, it recently received approval of the Indian government. Government of India plans to break limestone shoals called Ram's Bridge or Ram sethu as part of implementation of this project. A few organizations are opposing damage to Ramasethu on religious, environmental and economical grounds. Many of these parties or organizations support implementation of this project using one of the 5 alternative alignments considered earlier without damaging a structure considered sacred by Hindus. Current alignment is planned as Mid-ocean channel which is unprecedented.

  2. Adam's bridge, also known as Ram Setu  meaning "Rama's Bridge", is a chain of limestone shoals, between the islands of Mannar, near northwestern Sri Lanka, and Rameswaram, off the southeastern coast of India. Geological evidence indicates that this bridge acted as a former land connection between India and Sri Lanka.

The bridge is 30 miles (48 km) long and separates the Gulf of Mannar (southwest) from the Palk Strait (northeast). Some of the sandbanks are dry and the sea in the area is very shallow, being only 3 ft to 30 ft (1 m to 10 m) deep in places, which hinders navigation.

  3. You're thinking of Adam's Bridge.  It's not really a bridge, the water just gets really shallow.  You can't walk over it.
