Is there a need to put drywall in installing a bath/shower enclosure?

  1. Do all of the above and also paint the wall with bitumen paint available at most hardware shops. Good luck


  2. if it is a one piece shower unit then most builders put nothing behind it and sheetrock to it.  if it more than one piece unit then yes you should have a backer,  greenboard is the best. it is a water resistant sheetrock product.

  3. You would use what is called green board, as opposed to drywall, in a wet/humid environment.

  4. If your enclosure is rigid ( will support itself usually made from fiberglass ) then you will not have to use anything behind the enclosure.  If the enclosure is not rigid it has to have something behind it to support it.

    I have installed several enclosures and I have always used green board behind them just to cut down on the noise and vibrations that comes from the bath or shower when in use.

  5. Don't use greenboard, use a cement board.  I use Hardi-

    Backer, will get a much longer lasting shower/bath.
