Is there a non-penicillin Augmentin equivalent? Allergic reaction?

After 4 days on Augmentin 825 2x daily, I started feeling swollen. My abdomen seemed swollen, and I had some hand swelling too. Yesterday, my one hand swelled up so much it was crazy, and almost difficult to straighten.

I went off the augmentin - I didn't take it last night or this morning, and this afternoon I am already feeling less swollen.

My doctor thinks it's just an inflammatory reaction to the chronic infection (a dental bone infection) I've been fighting. I'm having the source of the infection removed next week (a failed root canal tooth).

But for now I don't know what to do. I'm taking the Augmentin in conjunction with clindamycin 300mg 3x a day.

I do feel worse infection-wise after going off the Augmentin, but like I said, I do feel less swollen.

  2. A non-penicillin Augmentin equivalent is a rather ambiguous term.  I tend to agree with your physician that it doesn't sound like some sort of anaphylactic response you may have had to the Augmentin (but in all fairness I don't have the benefit of your patient record that's confidential, so I'm just going by the data in your question alone).

The cephalosporin class of Antibiotics have some similarities to the β-lactams but even though the likelihood of anaphylaxis is significantly less, even with a history of penicillin "allergy" (which it doesn't seem to be the case for you), we still try to avoid it if at all possible.

In short, I recommend you let your prescribing physician determine which antibiotic is most suitable for your condition.
