    I have always thought you must think to know what is going on.  You see the world with your eyes, but your thoughts are what make things 'go'.

  4. There is a philosophy known sometimes as "monistic realism," associated for example with Ralph Barton Perry.

    When Perry and some colleagues wrote a book on the subject, published in 1912,  they called it "The New Realism," but since there have been a lot of newer usages of the word "realism" since 1912, that phrase is hardly ever used these days.

    Anyway, the idea of monistic realism is that consciousness is a relationship, not a thing.

    When I am conscious that a certain cow is black, where is the blackness? In my consciousness? No -- the monistic realists said. The blackness is on the hide of the cow. To say I am conscious of it is only to say that a certain nervous system is in a certain relationship with that cow and its black hide.

    They certainly meant this as the opposite of solipsism.
