I'm trying to do a reality check on some tales I've heard, and can't find detailed enough maps of the place on the net to get to the level of detail needed (especially since so many former settlements in the area have disappeared due to depopulation during the famine)

  1. I don't know about Dingle, but there is a place called Ardara in County Donegal.

  2. The only reference I could find is to an "Earthen Fort at Ardrath  (pronounced Ardraw)" " situated about a mile to the right of the main road going from Killarney to Killorglin" Co. Kerry.  I couldn't find any map detailed enough to find it.

  3. hi you

i am not to sure to be-honest bu if you check discoverireland.ie you will find out for sure

  4. Can't help re Dingle Peninsula but following may be of use from following websites.

    ** marks revelant entry.

    from http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia...

    Bantry Area Townlands

All in the parish of Kilmocomoge, most in the Barony of Bantry, some in the Baronies of West Carbery (West Division) one (Glanycarney) in East Carbery (East Division) WGS-84 (GPS) Coordinates: 51. ...

Abbey, Ard na mBrathar ('monks' height). Burial ground, friary iron working site.

Aghaghooheen, Achadh Ui Ghuithin (Guheen's field)

Ahil Beg and More, Athchoill (regrown wood). Standing stone.

Ahildotia, Athchoill Doite (burned regrown wood)

Ardaturrish Beg and More, Ard na dTuras (height of the pilgrimage). Burial ground coastal promontory fort.

Ardnacloghy, Ard na Cloiche (height of the stone)

Ardnagashel, Ard na gCaiseal (height of the forts)

Ardnageehy Beg and More, Ard na Gaoithe (windy height). Standing stone.

    Ardnamanagh,

    **Ardrath, Ard Rath (high fort)

This make me think you might have problems as there are lots of old high forts accross Ireland. Rath means Fort.

and perhaps the artist fron this site may help.. they have a painting ....3 up from the very bottom of this webpage called "Ardrath". Drop them an email?

finally this site shows the Bishoprics in Ireland and again I have marked the revelant entry **

    Ardmacanus: Armagh.

    Ardmorensis: Ardmore.

** Ardsrathensis: Ardstraw, Ardrath. (Ardstraw is in CoTyrone - now in Northern Ireland BUT " Alpha" replied re a place called Ardraw.....perhaps there is a connection...ie something mispelt many years ago?)

    Armacanus, Armakensis: Armagh (Archbishopric).

    Arthferdensis, Artfertensis: Ardfert.

  5. This link has several townlands with similar names such as Ardrahan but they're near Tralee rather then Dingle.  The thing is towns and villages in Ireland may have disappeared but not the name of the townland.

What you could also do is contact Kerry County Library, they should be able to put you in contact with the Reference Librarian or the county archives.

Edit: being honest, unless someone from Kerry comes on who knows the area can answer the question, I think your best bet would be to contact the Library - townlands don't always find their way onto maps & they're usually only known to locals.  If it's something slightly older you're looking for there is a document called Griffith's Valuation from 1847 which lists townlands etc from that time:

This link leads to a map from Griffiths Valuation 1848:

This link has the townlands, it even lists the one my mother's people are from & it's tiny but no Ardrath:

You could also try these guys, they have a centre in Kerry:

And this one just looks interesting:
