  1. I lived in Marseilles for some years and it was possible to go skying during winter weekends, the ski slopes were 2 hours away by car.

I would say that the area between Montelimar in the north, Marseilles in the South and the Italian border in the East would allow you to live close to the sea and rather close to the moutains.

Mind you, this is also the most expensive part of France to live in.

  2. I'd suggest the southeast corner of France.  There are lots of nice towns and beaches and the Alps are not far.

  3. Biarritz is in NOT in the North of France ;-)

  4. You might want to consider Biarritz in the north of France. Its got a really nice sandy beach and a relaxed atmosphere. Access to the Pyrenees is also really easy (although I can't say I've ever been skiing there). The only question mark I would raise is the weather but it is close enough to the Spanish border to get a reasonable amount of sun. From memory, flights from the UK are pretty regular too and I do remember being able to almost walk from the airport to the town, they are that close (although just far enough away not to be a bother).
