I am trying to find a place where i can proof if my great grandmother is Native American.

I was born in the United states. My parents came over to America legally and during thistime my mother gave birth to me. In two months though I went to mexico and my mother lost my birth certificate and I need a social security card and all other applicable legal documents. I know that there is a place where I can get an official document but I just want to see it online somewhere. Is this possible?

  1. To prove American Indian Ancestry is hard to do but not impossible.  You need to know your grandmother's full name, where she lived, and when  and where she was born.  The Census is a good place to look.  But for Indians you have to go from back to front, meaning start at the end of the Census.  Ex. Looking in 1910 in Oklahoma...Start at the end and go backwards  This is something no website will tell you.  That is how I found my grandfather.  At the end of the Census it will say "Indian Schedules".   I know this is true for Oklahoma, but I'm not sure about other states.  As most Indians did not want to be Indian, they may have listed themselves as White.  It may take a long time to prove.  Get the books "Cherokee Roots"  Listed in these two books are all the rolls of Cherokee.

If another tribe.. check out Genealogy.com or Ancestry.com and their rolls of the five civilized tribes. Cherokee Choctaw Seminole, Chickasaw, Creek.

As for vital records.. vitalrecord.com  You can get the birth ceritficate from the county of the State you were born in.  And yes, it costs money..what doesn't?

    Good Luck...

  2. No, you cannot get your vital records on-line.  Since you are a living individual, that information is protected by federal privacy laws.

To my knowledge, even for people who have been dead for 100 years, most state have very little of vital records on the internet for free.  Vital records is a source of income for them.  They make money when people order copies of birth and death records.  Also it is controlled as to who is allowed to order a copy.  Mostly, only direct ancestors or direct descendants can get a person's vital records.  By making it available for free on the internet means that anyone can get it.........even people who are not even related.

  3. Go to a site like

    http://www.vitalrec.com/

and order one.  It will cost you, but you cannot obtain that sort of thing for free. You may have to send a copy of a picture ID to prove who you are.

  4. For security reasons I'm sure there is no way to just see it online. That could be a huge risk for identity theft.

However, here are a couple links. It looks like the SS# card is free to get a new one.

As to vital records of deceased individuals, if your great grandmother is no longer living, try  here:
