Question:

Is there a place where a man can get a replacement lug for a Raleigh bile in Aluminium?

I've purchased a used bike at a police auction that has a broken frame. It's a nice bike but of course with the rear derailor lug broken off it's not so usefull as it might be. I could merely build up the frame with rod and carve out a new lug from the weld, but it seems a trifle desperate an option. Im hoping that somebody has a complete lug, or a source of broken frames with different problems than this one that I might mate the two back together into one that is "as good as new".

  1. I *think* I know what you're on about, you're not very clear.

Could you not use one of these?:

  2. The rear lug that you speak of is called a dropout with derailleur hanger.

If the rear hanger is not the replacable type then your "welding" option would be best. However, as you probably know, the frame has been annealed and aged to T6 so you'll probably end up with the frame failing in a more catastrophic way if you weld it up... unless of course you have a salt bath and aging room.

Again, you probably know this but if you decide to weld, use the correct rod- the luminum could be 6000 or 7000 series and they don't take kindly to using incompatible rod.

EDIT: Application of any heat to an aluminum frame over 275º will cause annealing. They demonstrate those rods using pure aluminum that isn't tempered. Don't use it to fix a bike frame!
