Question:

Is there a portable air conditioning unit out there on the market?

Please excuse my ignorance, but is there a portable air conditioning unit (blows out COOL AIR in a HOT ROOM) without being attached/fixed to the wall, as in carry it with you just plug it in to a wall socket and have it blow out cool air. I know this may seem like a dumb question, but a simple answer would be much appreciated. Thank you!

  1. There is a unit I saw at Grainger that hooks up to a water spout, it is basically a fan that has water fun over a paper waffle, air flows threw the waffle and cools the air by about 10 degrees, it would be less expensive running this than an airconditioner.

  2. there are two units that are kind of like that, but not quite. one is called a swamp cooler. they evaporate water to absorb thermal energy in a room, but make the room more humid, and only really work in dry climates. however, they are relatively cheap to buy and use little energy. the other is a regular AC unit, but, this is not a window unit. they make one that is a free standing floor unit that can be pushed around and plugged in anywhere. however, the only downside is that there is a 3 or 4 Inch diameter hose that comes out of the back of the unit that must be run outside, through a window or a cat door or something. the unit is  similar to window units in that it must move the heat from the room to the outside, but it does not have to hang out the window. they are about as expensive as regular window units. and are much more portable. you just have to point the hose outside.

just remember, the heat has to go somewhere. it is very hard to just make it disappear (like an endothermic reaction, a reaction that takes heat)

  3. Yes --- There is one like you describe sold at Wal-Mart that I have seen.

You set it in the room ---- hook up a vent hose ,and put it to a window, for the hot air to be blown outside . Much like a dryer blowing hot air through the vent hose to the outside.

Cold air out the front --- hot air out the vent hose to the window.

  4. the ones from Carrier, Miele, Samsung and so many more. Of course.

  5. Think of air conditioning as "heat removal". That's actually what it does. It removes heat from a room.

So, if you remove heat from the room, you need to put it somwhere. That's why most small air conditioners mount through a wall or window. They dump the heat removed from the room to the outside.

So, no. There always needs to be a path to dump the heat outside.

  6. There are portable units, but not quite that simple. They need to be put in a window so the hot air can be pumped outdoors; otherwise they can't do any good. That's simple Physics.

In fact, you can get some benefit from a simple fan placed to blow out a window or door, even without AC. The circulation helps carry heat away from your skin. Even a Japanese fan is better than nothing.

  7. Never heard of such a thing. However, Fry's Electronics  has units that use electricity and have one or two 4" hoses that must reach outside air somehow.  I do know that a unit MUST have a rating of more than 5,000 BTU. 5K BTU just wont cool anything. 7.5 and more , prefer 10,000 BTU. It can always shut off once in a while.

If you are dealing with two computers driving you out of a bedroom/office the problem is different. My central A/C just blows across the ceiling of the room and circulates the cold air back to the hall and re-circuates it. The heat does not leave the room!

I bought, for about five bucks, a recreational vehicle sewer hose from Wal-Mart, for about five bucks. I super glued the hose to the hot air outlet at the back of the computer. I piped the air  out of the room, right through the wall to outside air. I used a one - way flapper valve that is made to exhaust clothes dryer air out of a exterior wall.

It worked like a charm. Before this we had to cool the whole house to about 68 degrees so that the computer room was cool enough. Saved about two hundred dollars a month in this Sacramento area.
