I've heard if you use eye drops too often, your eyes will be dependent on them. Is it true?

  1. i dont think its true.

  2. yes ,eye drops such as visene or clear eyes should only be used when really needed. salene drops (salty water) can be used regulary

  3. read the package, honey.

constant use of medical eye drops weakens the effect of the drug /medicamentation. use for more than 4 weeks is seldom recommended.

if the drops are only a tear drop liquid replacement, then it don't matter.

  4. It depends on what sort of eye drops you are using, as long they are not antibiotics or pain killers.

It is OK to use eye cleaning and soothing drops.

  5. I've been told to stay away from brands like Visine. That's because it gets the red out by constricting the blood vessels in the eyes. Over time, that can have negative consequences.

  6. If you need to use non-prescription eye drops on a regular basis, for dry eye, never EVER use visine or any of that bottled garbage. Anyone using artificial tears on a regular basis needs to use PRESERVATIVE FREE -single use vials- of eye drops, like refresh (in vials, not bottles), theratears, bion tears, ect.

While these are safe to use on an extremely frequent basis, using them regularly may mean that your dry eye needs to be treated via some alternate means as well, such as plugs, compresses, flax oil, moisture chambers, ect.

Never use 'get the red out' drops on a more than EXTREMELY infrequent basis.

  7. Prolonged use of Visine is not recommended by the opthamologist I used to work for, because you can become dependant on them.  You eye is a muscle, and Visine contains a muscle relaxer.  It is numbing your eye, but it can affect and weaken the muscle over time.
