I thought the sun makes it grow quicker.

  1. The sun, and lack of water.

  2. Plain and simply, NO!!!

  3. No, but if you're feeding it at all you're only speeding it up and making it more susceptible to disease.  Stop all feeding and supplemental watering (I know how scary that sounds) and you'll end up with a tougher, slower-growing lawn with deeper roots.  Also learn to ignore the other green plants that are now part of your lawn, which some call weeds.   I have never fed or watered any lawn I've had, and I consistently get compliments on the deep green color of my lawn even during a drought.

Also, leave the clippings on when you mow.

  4. Yes, but only available to the trade as they are restricted use products.  They are real tricky to use.  There have been trials in using the products for sports stadium grass grown in less than perfect light situations where the dwarfing effect of the chemicals might help grass stay green.

There's been talk of growth retardants for lawns for decades and still nothing for public use.
