I went to my gym today and tried hitting a punching bag with gloves on but it hurts when I did it around my knuckle area. What am I doing wrong?

  1. This is a common occurrence, especially for beginners, eventually your skin and knuckles get used to the exercise. The other option is to use hand-wraps  this also helps to protect your wrist in case you hit the bag completely wrong .

  2. Yes use your kknuckles. wear gloves and hit it hard!!!

  3. when you punch keep your hand straight and clench hard only at the last minute because if you exhale and do what else I said at the same time you will get more power.

  4. SKin on the knuckles will tear its part of punching

The proper way to punch would be to use your index and middle fingers' knuckles. So put those two forward, and make sure your fist is tight, tuck your thumb down under neath

  5. Actually I have extremely sensitive skin, and my knuckles never rip. I think you have the wrong technique. You are probably leading with your knuckles, Instead try to land the point of the glove flush. This gives you the most power, because it is a straight line from your arm, through the glove, and to the point of contact.

Gloves by definition spread the force of impact, so the last thing you want to do is further dilute the impact by hitting the bag at an angle. You can always hear the difference between a flush landing and one that skims the bag. The flush landing will also feel different because you will feel your fingers compress as opposed to an indirect hit.
