I want to find a couple of people. I have their name and the city where they live. I've been told that you can get their basic information on line for free, but all the sites I've gone to, want to charge for the info.

  1. The sites you have gone to are businesses. THEY have compiled the information, and charge for their expenses, and to make money.  After all.. it is them that has done the research, not to mention, paying for the website and internet service.

I don't know what you consider "basic" information. What you want, may or may not be public records to begin with. Certain records (court records) are public.. but nothing requires the court to put them on the internet. Other records (birth certificates) are restricted information, except for those who have the legal rights to know it.

Part of finding "information" is knowing EXACTLY what you want to know, if it is or isn't public info, then finding IF it is online or not.  Takes time, energy, and knowledge.  That time and knowledge is what you pay for.

When you are doing genealogy (researching someone who is dead), all the options become different. Even then, there is still valid reasons for some pay sites.

  2. i wish! but no... its another one of those things people realized they could make money off of so they practically exploited it.  sry!

  3. you can try www.familysearch.org

sometimes they have info on living people

    its worked for me

    if not, try www.myheritage.com

you'll need to create an account for free

then register for something called "SmartMatches"

they email you a list of matching names and their families based on a family tree you upload.

    its all helpful

  4. USA Answer:

    http://www.zabasearch.com

    http://find.person.superpages.com/

Note that these will give you just their telephone number and maybe their address. "Research" sometimes covers more. If you want to check their credit report, neither site will help.
