Question:

Is there a real, legitimate threat of Roe v. Wade being overturned?

What are the TRUE odds that this will happen?

Even if the Supreme Court were "loaded" by the conservatives...does anyone honestly think they would or could make this ruling? If so, do you realize the repercussions? They would.

Do you think abortion will ever be illegal in this country? Abolished, even?

This seems to be a fairly common fear - or desire - whichever way you see it. Common enough - and those with this fear or desire are basing their vote on the issue? Are you?

I just don't believe it is realistic to think it will ever be overturned. I don't see it happening - not in my lifetime, my kids' lifetime, or their kids' lifetime. So it would make sense to keep your personal views on the subject - whatever they are - out of the voting booth.

Those of you who are making this a primary factor in whom you will vote for - either way - I am certainly not minimizing the issue at all - I realize it is a touchy, passionate subject that people feel very strongly about. I would simply like to know more on the logic behind this.

  1. Roe vs Wade will be overturned as it is unconstitutional in the first place.   Federal judges have no business mandating and legislating from the bench.  Supposed rights as abortion and g*y marrige are not rights or entitlements granted within the framework of the constitution. These if anything are individual states rights issues and are best left to a vote of the people at that level.

  2. Roe vs Wade will be overturned no doubt, but it will, because it was bad law using a phony pretext to get it passed. It won't make much difference as the result will simply be the return of States rights that were circumvented.

  3. You can kiss legal abortion goodbye, or it will be so restricted that only rich white women with a passport will be eligible.  Yep...you'll have to go to some less retarded country to get this particular service.  But wait...there's more!  If 'personhood' is extended to a fertile egg, then traveling to a foreign country for an abortion will be considered 'kidnapping'.  I can hardly wait for the 10,000 or more kidnap/murder trials staged by grim faced D.A's.  Just wait until the 'state' puts your wife, girlfriend, sister, aunt, daughter, neighbor lady or co-worker on death row....what a picnic that'll be!  The Jesus freaks will rejoice!

  4. Well, I do.  I think when the people speak, it is the responsibility of the powers that be to listen and make the changes being demanded.  Majority rules, and in this case, yes, if enough people are heard and stand up, then, it can happen - and should.

There needs to AT LEAST be reforms on abortion, since when is it ok to kill an innocent in America?  Really?  Really?  Yea, Really, Americans typically don't stand for the killing of innocents, but we stand at arm's length with abortion because they "aren't people yet".

My kid is almost eight months old now, and doctors were telling my wife and I that "it" was a blighted ovum and we should look into having "IT removed".  Obviously I got a second opinion!  And when

Obama says c**p like, that question is above my paygrade, that tells me he doesn't even WANT to consider reforms or anything, he is fine with letting innocents die under his watch.  And incidentally, whatever happened to the old, "the Buck Stops Here" mentality, there is no higher paygrade than POTUS, so, you don't get my vote Obama.

  5. The odds of Roe v Wade are very slim, even if the Supreme Court was loaded with "conservative" judges (minding that judges are suppose to be impartial). The knowledge of what would happen if abortion was made illegal again (underground clinics, "doctors" performing abortions, coat hangers, etc) probably is enough to keep Roe v Wade from ever being overturned. And note: The only time you ever Really hear the whole "abortion" debate is every 3 years when the new presidential candidates start coming out.

  6. I certainly hope so; then people will look before they leap... into bed.

  7. It's important to understand that abortions go on whether legal or not. Before Roe v. Wade, authorities never pulled dead rich women from back alleys. Sadly, it was always the poor that suffered. The affluent had their doctors perform the procedure in the comfort and safety of their medical office.

I remember before Roe v. Wade when my mother, grandmother, and another woman were at our kitchen table. They had just come back from a funeral of a friend who was a victim of a botched abortion. With tears streaming down my grandmothers face she chokingly said, "It's a d**n shame that we live in a country where dogs receive better treatment than a woman."

My father drove an ambulance in Washington D.C. He and my mother cried when Roe v. Wade passed as it meant my father and his colleagues wouldn’t have to look at those horrid scenes from botched abortions anymore.

Back then, the pillars of the community knew who the abortion doctors were. They made sure they were around. Not just to take care of slip ups at home but more importantly, to take care of their little secrets. The local Sheriff was well aware of what was going on. But if he wanted to keep his job and win his next election, he knew he’d better watch his P’s and Q’s. Get it? Meanwhile, the sheriff helped pull injured and dead poor women out from back alleys. It wasn’t right that the poor suffered while the affluent didn’t. That scenario is one of many reasons R v. W passed.

The problem with contemporary views on abortion is the element of time. People have forgotten or are too young to know what went on before Roe v. Wade. And the GOP isn’t going to remind us either.  Against our best interest, they use the issue to stir our emotions to sucker us for our votes.

  8. There is no real threat to any change in the decision.  Most Republicans are satisfied with the way things stand.  It's only a rabid minority that feel that their views are the only ones that should be allowed.

  9. The Supreme Court has reversed itself more than a few times in its history (Plessy v. Ferguson overturned by Brown v. Board of Education for one).  There is no question that Roe v. Wade will be overturned when Ginsburg or Stevens is replaced by a justice with views like those of Scalia, Alito, Roberts, and Thomas.  This will make abortion rights subject to state law.  There will be efforts to outlaw or restrict abortion rights in the states.  Some of those efforts will succeed, others will fail. Abortion rights are linked ideologically to the issue of g*y marriage and civil unions, so you only need to look at how that issue is evolving from state to state to see what will happen to abortion rights after Roe v. Wade is overturned.

If abortion rights are a big deal to you, the issue has to affect your vote in 2008.  I absolutely think this is the main and maybe only reason that many Republicans will hold their collective noses and vote for McCain, a man they hated with passion less than 2 years ago.  And this issue is the only reason why Palin and not Lieberman is McCain's VP nominee.

  10. The odds that Roe v. Wade will be overturned are exactly to the odds of McCain/Palin being elected.

  11. Keeping my views out of the answer I would say no, there is not much chance that abortion will ever be made illegal again.
