Question:

Is there a real chance to finally see a Roy Jones and Bernard Hopkins fight?

Of course there are a few hurdles to clear with other fights before we get to that point. But, I think there is a REAL possibility we could actually see it. A year ago, this wasn't even a a possibility, but now... it could happen, if things fall right.

  1. As usual, "elmer" had an answer that totally cracked me up.  He was probably thinking the same thing I thought when I read the question. . . ."Didn't they fight like a decade ago, and Roy won?"

To ask if they'd possibly fight AGAIN. . . now that's a question.  It's a matter of dollars.  Just like Roy vs Tito, Tyson vs Evan Fields III, and now Roy vs Bernard. .  . . do these fights really MEAN anything?  No, not really.  But at least we can say we saw it. . . and I don't, at the end of the day, really care if a fight matters in the grand scheme of things.  Perfect example. . . . . Mayorga vs Vargas. . .both trash talkers, both act tougher than they are, but both come to fight and actually KILL their opponents.  It ended up being a rather good fight.  Even though. . it didn't matter in the slightest who won.  Vargas is done, and Mayorga has already been passed over by Mosley (for a tougher fight with Zab Judah). . . .so Mayorga's win really meant very little.

Does Roy-BHop II mean anything?  Nope.  Will I watch?  You bet your ace.

  2. Its always a possibility but it should have happened a long time ago when both were still a big draw. They've both aged quite a bit and neither has the speed or skill that they once had.

  3. Would you really want to?

Their combined age is 82 and their first fight was a borefest.

I'd much rather see Calzaghe fight Dawson/

  4. Just imagine what would have happened if these 2 fought in their prime?

yah, I'm trying to be a bit of a smart alec

  5. They might. After Joe Calzaghe has whipped both of them. They could have a lucky loser fight off.

  6. Simple Answer - $$$$$$$$$

This definitely has a chance to happen. If you notice with boxing these days winning and losing does not affect making a big name fight.  Look at Mayorga vs Vargas recently. Neither of these guys won a meaningful fight in years, and have been stopped in big fights recently. Their fight was hyped and was a pay-per view success. Promoters can hype this fight up with the bad blood between the two, and sell a ton of pay-per views.

The real answer to this is who really wants to see two great fighters so far out of their prime? Hopkins may have beat Tarver and Wright recently, but they were such boring and uneventful fights that I could barely watch. Tarver is out of shape and old himself, and I feel he gets a lot of credit from only beating a very washed RJJ. Who else has he been so great against?

Roy Jones Jr has not looked impressive since beating John Ruiz. Since then, you can clearly see his speed, reflexes, and power have basically disappeared. Even in beating Trinidad, I was not impressed. A young Jones ends that fight early.

We seen what happened the first time. Jones was still VERY green during their first fight, but won an easy decision. In their prime, Hopkins could not beat Jones. Hopkins likes to fight at his pace and dictate the action. He could not beat Jones at that since Jones was far superior in speed, power, and reflexes.

  7. I think it's a definite possibilty now that Roy Jones is not close to where he was when he was ducking Hopkins.  Now Jones needs this fight more than Hopkins and he's lucky that Hopkins will still take the fight.

  8. Rob D- I don't think Elmer was trying to be a smart a.s.s.- he was recognizing the fact that the first fight took place before either reached their primes.....................................

And to Chris Guzman who said Jones/Hopkins II wouldn't mean anything- ARE YOU ON CRACK?..............................

First of all Bernard Hopkins is rated at number 4 on the pound for pound list, if Roy can beat him again it will mean redemption to a degree.....................................

Second of all, both of these guys are still fighting at a high level, for a true boxing fan to see a fight like this means a lot- it could also possibly be for a championship...............................

So I'm definitely looking forward to this happening- it means a lot!.......................................

First Hopkins has to beat Calzaghe- THAT MY FRIEND- AIN'T GONNA BE EASY!......................................

If Calzaghe beats Hopkins- Then Roy should try and get Calzaghe first, if Calzaghe wants nothing of it, then Pavlik!

  9. I agree with Woody. I will watch it but this should have happened at least 5 yrs ago. At this point neither is as good as they were at their peak. It wouldn't prove which fighter is better historically. It would probably prove which fighters skills have eroded more.

  10. The possibility is there, but both men need to take care of whatever business they have in front of them, like Hopkins getting by Calzaghe and Jones doing whatever it is that he plans on doing. Afterwards they would need to put aside their differences, which was the big reason why they never had a rematch years earlier. Unfortunately, a rematch should have happened at least five years ago, but neither men could do away with their egoes and agree on a pursue. Hopkins wanted 50-50, while Jones wanted 60-40 since he had already beat him. If a rematch developes, I'll watch it definitely, but it want be as interesting as it would have if it had happened years ago.

  11. it would definitely be an interesting match up.
