Does it show up in iTunes?  If it does, make sure the "Open iTunes when connected" option is checked.

if you have multiple usb ports, try another.  if that doesn't work, it may be your computer settings.  you can open iTunes and try to sync it manually.  if it's not showing up in the menu, keep trying to plug it in and unplug it until it recognizes it. there may be something wrong with your ipod, in which case, you may need to restore it to its factory settings.
