Is there a reason to buy both a jig saw and circular saw or do they do the same thing?

A jigsaw can cut curves and circles in thin wood or plywood.  A circular saw cuts in a straight line and is more powerful than a jigsaw.

they are two different saws that do very different things....the jig saw is for more of a veried cut where you do not realy care if it is straight or not as well as is used for designs. the circular saw is for straight cuts most of time plywood..

You need a jig saw to cut curves and circles and a circular saw is for straight cuts. It does sound like it should be the other way around....doesn't it.

Well yeah they both do the same thing cut wood, then if you change their blades you can cut other materials, But these saws are very different the jig saw you can cut circles, with the circular saw is good for cut 2x4's plywood sheets, change the blade and you can cut cement, brick, block, cement board, so it will depend on what type of project your building. Circular saws are for ripping or cross cutting boards and plywood.

Jig saws are primarilyly used to cut irregular shapes, such as scroll work and curves. Jig saws also cut straight thru wood, so this is the type of saw you would want to use if you are going to stop a cut part way and still leave a straight edge.

They both cut wood... but it's they type of cutting they do that is the difference.

The circular saw is for straight cutting, while the jigsaw is used for the cutting of shapes, such as curves.

they are not the same. circular saw is much more powerful and can handle thicker wood. a circular saw is also designed for straight lines and more direct angles. jig saw is for freestyle cuts such as circles and odd curves that you can never obtain with a circular saw.
