Question:

Is there a reason why some drivers do not put on their headlights in badly weather and visibility?

Just wondering, as the other day when it was raining very heavily, a good number of drivers had no lights on at all.

Surely when visibility is bad you have your main or half lights on for others to be able to see you?

  1. because they still drive the old cars that the headlights do not turn on automatically ?

  2. Its because they are not very bright.

  3. They think that because they can be seen then everything is ok.

They forget that the purpose of switching lights on is to be seen

  4. They are morons

  5. they just don't think nor do they notice others with their lights on.

  6. Yes, there is. STUPIDITY.

  7. because they are moronic fools who dont care about other road users or anybody else for that matter

  8. i am guilty of this. also my lincoln has automatic headlights.. a sensor turns them on.. and through the years.. it did not increase my visibility. so a lot of people just forget.. now in new jersey its the law... wipers on lights on.. its so the other driver can see you ok

  9. The same reason people tailgate and don't use their turn signals...they're inconsiderate and shouldn't be allowed to drive.  :)

  10. light reflects off water therefor it makes it harder to see

  11. yes they are stupid

  12. They are described as Impulsive, Lazy, Forgetful, Ostriches, Followers, and the Dare Devils.

  13. for the same reason that they do not indicate when they are about to make a turn - they expect us to be mind readers and be able to guess what they are about to do - in bad weather they don't mind if you can't see them and hit them, then they can claim off your insurance

  14. Same reason people don't use directionals

The same reason why people don't look BOTH ways before exiting a parking lot or leaving a stop sign!

Same reason people still drive normal highway speeds with snow or rain and ESPECIALLY in fog!

The AVERAGE person becomes a complete moron behind the wheel.......you can double that amount when there is any type of weather which effects driving conditions........

  15. Older models cars weren't designed with Daylight Running Lights.

    So maybe they forgot?

My car doesn't have them either... It's great for sneaking around at night.

  16. because they are either stupid or ignorant and think they are the only vehicles on the road

  17. Laziness is the main cause, and the belief that it costs money to use the lights. I drive what the Americans call an 18 wheeler , and have seen it all over the years.

Believe it or not, in the UK it is the law that if you are using the windscreen wipers, then you MUST also have "dipped" headlights on. No other lights ie front or rear fog lights are to be used even in heavy spray conditions, as the rear "fogs" can very easily be mistaken for brake lights by following motorists who then brake, and cause rear end shunts. I have set my car head lights to "auto - on" and windscreen wipers to auto ( Peugeot 406 ) - so if the wipers work for more than 5 "sweeps" the heads turn on.

  18. Stupidity, basically. Curiously, in the UK it is NOT the law that you have headlights on when using the wipers, though it ought to be. It IS the law that foglights are only used in conditions of seriously reduced visibility, which includes heavy rain, fog, snow, smoke, spray etc reducing visibility to 100 metres or less.

  19. It's mainly forgetfulness. As long as they can see where they're going, they don't think about headlights. It's true that headlights serve two purposes - to see and be seen. More people need to realize that.

Perhaps they think it's not quite bad enough for headlights - a big mistake. They'll use parking lights instead, which is totally useless.

I've been using the same method for years, and I taught it to both of my kids when they started driving: When you find yourself thinking about whether or not to turn on your lights, turn them on. If it's dark enough to think about them, it's dark enough to use them.

  20. I think it's the same drivers who fail to indicate because they happen to live locally and think everyone else is psychic.

  21. I find that even at night people are so dopey they don't switch lights on. Can they not see that the instrument panel is in darkness?
