Question:

Is there a reasonably priced lawyer in Edmonton who deals with spousal support from another province?

I don't qualify for one of those "no cost" lawyers that some people qualify for on social assistance. I don't have a lot of money due to the fact my "ex" has stopped support payments without any explanation. I need a lawyer willing to take him on even though he lives in another province. The problem is I can't afford a highend lawyer. Any suggestions?

  1. We now live in Edmonton and needed a lawyer.  Go on the Internet and enter "lawyerlocate.ca" for a list of lawyers.  Some will answer you online if they will take your case.  I have a toll free number to try "1-866-538-0376".  Also, there is a long list in the phone book - look for the area you need, ie:  family court, divorce, business, criminal...  Then just call one at a time to see who will take the case.  They shouldn't charge you for the call.   Hope this is some help.

    Been there.

  2. i would check legal aid, and also call the lawyer referral service and see if you can get a lawyer on contingency, ie., if the support is past due and you are owed a certain amt the lawyer will get ten to fourty percent AFTER the money is in his hot little red hands, he gets paid u get paid,  there are some lawyers who will also drop fees based on your income, it can then be a slow process and will the spouse move in the meantime?  try lawyer referral, you are given 3 lawyers to call and talk to for half and hour free of charge, if they feel u have a case invite you in to talk about it, try calling back a second and third time and get 3 lawyers each time, and find a woman too... so, a couple of men and one woman, service thats free in alberta,  good luck from Vancouver.
