  1. yap! it characterized the amount and quantity of organic in that particular soil. The texture also changes the more organic matter is in the soil.


  2. Very much so.  The darker the soil the more organic matter in the soil.  Soils very high in organic matter can be completely black.

  5. There are several factors that determine the colour of the soil.

    Black soil usually has a high level of organic matter in it, but it can also be highly mineralized black clay or silty soil.

    Reddish soil usually has a higher iron content, but it can ALSO be reddish and very rich in organic matter.

    Gray soil can indicate a high content of clay,  but there is also  such a thing as red clay that has a high iron content.

    Buff-coloured soil usually has a higher sand content, but in some locations can have very high levels of organic matter also.

    All of the above colours can be altered to some degree by water content also,  and by the TYPE of organic matter in the soil.

    Color also varies with the actual content of moisture.

    Lighter colors indicate less organics to wick moisture from the environment. Drier in general.
