I am travellling to Rome, FLorence and Venice and will not be renting a car. Mostly, will be travelling by cabs. I have a 6 yr old who will be with me. Are there any requirement for child seats for cabs in Italy? Any responses are greatly appreciated!

  1. No there is not. I live in Italy with my 26-month-old and cab drivers have been shocked when I've wanted to use a car seat!! Although required, you might even have trouble finding seatbelts in the back seat of some cabs (demand the driver pull them out for you before he takes off).

At 6 years old most children here are no longer using any kind of restraint system -- even if they are recommended and there is a modest publicity campaign there is no law that requires it. In fact, many people carry their children of all ages, even infants, in their laps, which I find irresponsible but the car seat mentality has not seemed to hit Italy yet. (Everyone was shocked when I gave birth to my son and told them that in the U.S. you can't leave the hospital with your baby if you don't have a car seat!!)

  2. Doubt it very much
