I have replied to several offers that were posted in my freecycle group and just wondered if there was a proper way to reply, other than the obvious.

  1. Be polite, be honest, be enthused. Like "I've been wanting that widget for a while, I'd give it a happy home."

Then contact information and possible pick up times (especially if you have some limitations on that).

Personally, I often pick people who have also offered stuff on my group, so you may want to make sure it is something you do.

Last, I often close with "Whatever you decide, thanks for offering this on Freecycle!"

  2. Being polite is always appreciated.  Also, providing as much information as you can, like when you can pick the item up.  If someone replies with just a phone number to call them while another person replies that they can pick the item up that evening, I'd chose the person who said when they can pick up!
