Is there a rule about when to dig potatoes?

We put things in and don't know when to dig them out

  1. My parents used to dig them up right before the first frost of the season.


  2. Root around under the potato and feel for one... if they are big enough to pick, then pick them... Usually when the leaves above ground start to get brown and die back, it is time to pick them.

    You can also pick any time you want.  Just dig around the stem and pick as many as you need.  Just be aware that you will not have as many when it is time to harvest.

  3. After the plant blooms with White flowers it will dry up and be ready to harvest. Make sure you mark the location because if you don't dig them up for a while weeds can take over and it Will be hard to find them. Remember if any are close to the surface and are green that part is poisioned and should be discarded.

  4. Rule of thumb for digging potatoes is when the plant starts turning yellow or totally dies.
