Question:

Is there a safe and easy way for me to clean my keyboard? I'd like to take the keys out and wash them.?

It looks simple to me, just unscrew, pull apart, wash keys and outer shell, then reassemble. Or am I getting into something that will cause me to have to buy another keyboard?

  1. The best thing to do is to spray a can of that compressed air into your keyboard to clean it out.

  2. How about trying this:

    unplug from tower

    get some rubbing alochol

and a old toothbrush and some cloths

    some canned air

    and proceed as follows:

    spray first with canned air

    then

put alchol on cloth and rub your keyboard down

use toothbrush to get between keys

    repeat again til clean

remember to spray with air again to make sure its dry

the alochal will kill any germs and remove yuck, air will blow out crumbs, dust, ashes from cigs etc...

and prepare to to this as often as necessary

what ever you do dont put in dishwasher or expose to any water, it will fry it out. Push comes to shove buy a new one!

  3. no if you do this it can not work again

  4. Don't laugh -

Put the whole thing in the dishwasher, but don't use any soap.  Dry it out well with a hairdryer.  It's only water, and it will evaporate.  I've done this several times when the keys get black.

New KBs are cheap - you could just buy a nice new one.

  5. The best noninvasive way is to get some canned air and in short bursts blow out the gunk. And then with a lintfree cloth go over the keys and outside with rubbing alcohol or alcohol that's no less than 99% alcohol (this is industrial alcohol used for cleaning and dries out your skin if you don't use gloves)

I'd look into what kind of keyboard you have. What model. Some will let you pry up the keys, some may not and you might break the keys by doing so. If you can then I'd get some sort of netted bag (holes smaller than the keys of course) and run them through the dish washer. Also you might have a keyboard that may be more of a hassle to put back together.

If you can successfully take the shell of the keyboard away from the circuit board inside by unscrewing them, and making sure there are no separate circuit boards or dohickies dangling or connected to the shell, run both sides of the shell through the dish washer. If the shells have any decals on them like plastic stickers or printed icons on the plastic then it might be a good idea to just wipe it down with a damp lintless cloth because the heat of the dish washer may melt the glue holding them on or melt the paint of of the icons off. Make sure everything's dry before you put things back together. And wipe the circuit boards with a lintless cloth and rubbing alcohol if they need it. Just remember where everything goes so you can put things back. Put the screws in a baby food jar or something similar to make sure you don't lose them.

  6. Unless you are very fond of you k/board it is not worth doing but if you want to then

Undo all the screws and split it.

The keys are held on with a like clip with hooks. squeezing them will remove them.

    Good luck
