I am wondering why Late Febuary is "High season" at Sierra Nevada Ski resort. Will it be infested with school kids or generally crowded

  1. February 28th. is the regional holiday "Día de Andalucía"

....Schools may have a week off depending what day it falls on. It is equivalent to a mid-term holiday week.

Some places will have a long weekend trip to the ski resorts in Sierra Nevada. And defintely, the resorts will be crowded...

  2. Hi, Yes there is "El dia de Andalucia" which is the 28th of February and many take long week ends and yes it will be infested with brats and "domingueros".

But beside this it is considered high season in Sierra Nevada not because of the feast but because from 15 th of January to End of April is when you are more porbably going to find better and deeper snow there. Howevever in Spain there are many other ski resorts as good or better than sierra Nevada which is famous basically because it is in Andalucia and is also only 40 km from the Coast so you can ski and bathe.Even the other ski resorts are not as high as Veletta peak theyr are very high have as many or more "pistas" and "remontes" or lifts.

I ski since I was four and I am spanish so have been in most of the over 40 ski resorts in spain. You can try other, and many of them have peaks that are around 3000 meters high Veleta is 3.500 meters or similar. I like Sierra Nevada but its not my favourite anyway at least when my number one consideration is Skiing and the quality and type of Snow. In Sierra nevada is rare to be able to ski "fuera de pista" or outside the run in virgin snow. The Pyriness are as good as the Alps or Central - Western US ski resorts without doubt. Also some of these three below have Heli-Ski and that is a complete different stroy as you might know. I would recommend first:

Baqueira Beret in the Val d´aran

    Formigal in Aragonese Pyrenees

    Astún also Aragonese Pyrenees

still there are many more with very good pistas, many remontes and many other incentives or "advantages" that make your stay morte intersting or have other interesting activities and things to visit or geo-location. For heliski or helicopter excursions youwill find:

Double click below and you.ll find more info in english about skiing in Spain:

The best in Spain are in the pyriness and aside ta couple in the Central system and the Cordilllera Astur leonesa the other areas are not so hot, although if compared with some US eastern and north european ski resorts they aint bad either. You can also double click for Pyrennes resorst in Spain, France and Andorra:

    Good luck and enjoy
