Question:

Is there a service that would allow me to register my phone number with them and have the calls forwarded?

I am looking to keep my phone number but eliminate the need for the phone company or VOIP provider. Not looking for a free service. It would be great to have the calls forwarded to another number with distinctive ring but not required.

  1. Call your phone company and ask them if they have Call Forward feature that you can subscribe to.

If not, your only real option may be to subscribe to a VoIP service that supports LNP (Local Number Portability) and have your phone number ported to their service.  Then have all calls to your number forwarded to the number(s) of your choice.

You wouldn't need to cancel your local phone provider, just change to a new phone number (once your old number is ported to another service).

Except for the upfront LNP porting fees, having a VoIP service host your phone number and forwarding calls doesn't have to be an expensive venture.  You won't even have to buy or use any VoIP equipment.

Two companies I use to do this is InPhonex and CallCentric (links through my profile).  They will port your phone number.

InPhonex Liteline only costs $7.95/month.  You can have all calls to your ported phone number permanently forwarded to any number (or multiple numbers) of your choice.  Forwarding  calls only costs 2.5 cent/min.

CallCentric can do the same thing.  Their phone number service only costs $1.95/month + 1.5 cent for incoming calls to your number.  Then set the account to forward to any phone number of your choice.  Forwarding calls only costs 1.9 cent/min.

There ar No Contracts, or commitments.  Both InPhonex and CallCentric are strictly Pay-As-You-Go, no strings... quit anytime.
