Question:

Is there a shortage of Carers in New Zealand?

We may be moving to NZ (I've been offered an Engineering job). My wife is a carer for the elderly, but that job description isn't listed on the 'Shortage List' on the NZ immigration website.

Anyone know the answer to this? Also, what kind of salaries are paid for this type of work in NZ.

Thanks everyone.

  1. Well my wife is a carer.  We live in the far south, out in the country, and there's a shortage here and I think in most places.  She only gets about NZ$14.23 for personal care, and $13.23 an hour for domestic help, which is chickenshit, and explains why there's a shortage.

  2. I'm not sure as to whether there is a shortage of carers, however here is a link to a site that advertises current vacancies and there are currently 89 listings under the keyword of caregiving.

    http://www.trademe.co.nz/browse/jobs/lis...

I'm not sure if any of them list the actual pay rate/salary but at least this will give you some idea of the number/type of care  jobs that are available, hope this helps

if that link doesn't work the go to http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-me-jobs/i... and click on the healthcare link, then caregiving from there

  3. Im not too sure about a shortage of carers however (due to a high turnover of carers) their are for the most part a need for carers within the health system, also depending on where you will reside within the community (as elderly are making a decision to live in their own homes rather than living in community based centres) require daily visits from community based carers.

http://www.careers.govt.nz/default.aspx?... this website gives you information on caregivers and different areas of the industry and yes it also gives you the going rate here in NZ although I do know several people in the industry that get a higher rate than what is given here.

good luck I hope this is what you are looking for.......
