Question:

Is there a shortage of teachers in Australia?

I am training to be a secondary school science teacher in the UK, with my main areas (for A-Level) being Chemistry and Biology. I know that there is a shortage in the UK and will therefore not have a problem finding a job.

However, after many visits, would love to work in Australia. Therefore, after a few years experience, would I be able to do this?

Thanks

  2. Australia has a big shortage in Math/Science teachers.  I work in Queensland and you could select a region and get a job very quickly.  You do not need much experience (number of years) to get a job but it will determine how much you get paid.  If you want to come you need to become registered with the teaching board in the state or territory you want to work in.  I have put a link for Queensland and they should be able to put you in touch with other regions.  This is the process for state schools (government/public schools). The private system mainly goes on interview.  It is important to get registered before you arrive if you want to work ASAP.  I would also look at the terms we have in Australia and match your visit in to start our school year or the start of a term.  We start our new school year in January each year.  We also need lots of supply teachers, this is day to day but is good if you need to work before you get a full time job.  Another good idea is to ask the teacher registration site or board you use to put you in touch with syllabus for the subjects you want to teach.  I have put a link to the one for Queensland. Good Luck!
