brown envelope is often referred to as manila envelope.

I would use a darker envelope if I didn't want someone holding it up to the light to see whats in it!!  That would be my only reason for a darker envelope, like a brown envelope.  Otherwise, I wold probably, if given the choice...would use yellow.  Such a pretty color!!!
