Ask the travel agency if they are a member of the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA). ASTA is a professional organization whose members are required to adhere to a code of ethics. If they do something that is in violation of the code, you can file a complaint with ASTA's Consumer Affairs Department. For more information, go to www.asta.org.

You can also check your local Better Business Bureau to see if they have a history of complaints about the agency. If your state licenses travel agencies, check with the department that is responsible.

For online travel, any of the major cites (Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz, Hotwire, Priceline) are legitimate.
