  1. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/f...

might have some, especially if you are Mexican or German. You would have to find the name and birthdate of someone in your family born before 1900, though. You and your parents and grandparents will not be on it.

As others have said, much of the genealogy data on the Internet is about Americans and their European roots.

  2. You have not provided enough information.  NO site is going to have everything on every family from every country.  Many sites don't have anything on any country other than the US.  Not every family is on line, so many families will not be found anywhere on any site.  Many countries have very poor genealogical records and have very little on line any where.  Someone might be able to guide you further to a site that might be more specialized to your country, but you did not say where you are from.

  3. Adair's answer was totally correct and accurate, and there was no reason for a thumbs down.

You have many ancestors, each of whom will have different records, and without knowing WHERE they were, no one can direct you to good sources.  Probably the one piece of advice that is workable (in my mind) for EVERYONE, to not think in terms of your "family" as one finished product, but individual persons, each of whom need to be researched independently.

The majority of online information is geared to the US and the UK.  There are other sources, but I can't tell you which ones are relevant to you.

  4. Maayan C...It is possible, but not probably. As you did not say where your roots are from, it is difficult to give a precise answer.

www.ancestry.com provides trees and information for at least most of Europe (mine are from all of the British Isles, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Italy and Greece (and all the other European countries for that matter) that I have found on Ancestry.

Start by asking all your living relatives for as much information as they can provide you with. Here in the states one can go to a public library and research using the internet, books and publications. Find out what is available where you are.  Ancestry has trees from Europe; other sites have trees from Asia, Africa, and Central and South America.

If you can go back far enough, and if you have ancestors from Europe, sooner or later you will connect to a tree that is also yours.

Approximately 1600 years ago, every one alive today came from the same ancestors.  (See: "Mapping Human History" by Steve Olson.)

If all else fails, opt for a DNA test.  I went through www.familytreedna.com and found I have ancestors from all the continents.  Of course, this would not provide you with names and dates, but it would show WHERE your ancestors came from.
