See my Grandfather's cousin,Jim Campas,was a Paratrooper during WWII,during

D-Day he,like hundreds of other Paratroopers, landed in a tree.A German soldier who was alerted to his presence shot him, while Jim was practically defenseless. Now over the 60 or so years things have been forgotten and lost.I'd like to see if theres a way or site to track down what unit he was in as in regiment, company, platoon, etc. All I know is that he was in the 101st Airborne.

  1. Are you talking James G. Campas? Private First Class, died at Normandy? 506th Regiment, assigned to Regimental HQ.

Got to looking through 101st Airborne Division pages and then turned more specifically to 101st regiments. Found the name on the 506th Regiment's web page under WWII section of the  the Currahee Memorial.

Edit: It means I screwed up. It lists by Battalion, Company, Rank, First Name, Middle Initial, Last Name, Date Killed in Action, Location they died. I read HQ as regimental, but it's actually the Battalion HQ as you're grandfather's cousin is listed as 1-HQ-Pfc-James-G-Campas-6/6/44-Normandy. So I gave you the right regiment but sent you to the wrong place in the regiment.

Going to Photographs and history, WWII,1st Battalion, Articles, Members of A Company, 1st BN, 506th PIR, 1942-1945 doesn't list him as a member of Able Company (A for Able, B for Baker, C for Charlie, D for Dog, E for Easy, etc), sao that suggests that the HQ was a different company. Looks like he might have been more directly under Major William L. Turner, who was the 1st Battalion commander from December of '42 to June 7, '44.

  2. The genealogy section will probably be more likely to help you. Many genealogists research that type of thing and can probably tell you where to look.

  3. There are a couple of services that allow you to look up veterans by name.

  4. Is that stuff classified?
