Is there a socio-economic statement behind the hipster aesthetic?

hipsters are starting to get a little ridiculous, but i think the aesthetic is more or less trying to say something about shying away from large corporations and supporting more independent establishment. but in doing so, they themselves are becoming more and more part of the mainstream they are trying to avoid. ugh.
