  1. I wonder what your name is, I wonder if you know? Your name is...... (point to a child, or roll a ball to them and get them to try and say their name, if not you can help them out) Hello, hello, hello, hello, hello, hello hello.

    OR

Bee bee bumble bee, won't you say your name for me? (A good one for when you are transitioning children to the toilet.)

  2. My students loved :

(make a circle of 1/2 of the children. then sing)

Open the circle for __NAME OF CHILD WAITING__

    Welcome, welcome in.

Open the circle for __REPEAT NAME__.

She /he is our very good friend.

And there's always room, for one more friend

    (repeat--Open the circle ....)

Continue until all have been welcomed, then switch the original circle members with the new circle members and repeat until all new ones have been welcomed.

(If the class is large divide into groups and let each adult there take a group.)

  3. Do you know the tune Frere Jacques?

Well, you change the words.  The whole class sings a child's name (in brackets)

    WHERE IS (JOHN)

    WHERE IS (JOHN)

    PLEASE STAND UP

    PLEASE STAND UP

    HOW ARE YOU TODAY (JOHN)

(John stands up and answers by himself)

    VERY WELL THANK YOU

    (whole class)

    PLEASE   SIT  DOWN

    PLEASE   SIT DOWN.

Then choose another child and say to the class, this time it's Anna.....I do this in my first lesson, it works.  The children enjoy, there is class/individual participation....the children think it's real cool.  Good luck

  4. "doggie, doggie, where is your bone. someone took it from your home. guess who. might be you!"

and the 'doggie' (a child) is sitting in a chair, hands covering her eyes, under the chair there is a 'bone' . Class sits on the carpet in front of the child, point to a child on the carpet to 'take' the bone under the chair, before doggie looks have all the kids put their hands behind their backs. Give doggie three guesses. usually the kids tell on each other!

  5. The "Where is (Name)?" song (to the tune of Where is Thumbkin) is probably the most used song, and works well for young preschoolers.

For slightly older preschoolers (three or four year olds), I like the "Chicky-Chicky Beat" rap.

    HEY, CAMERON

    YOU'RE A REAL COOL CAT

    YOU GOTTA LOTTA THIS

    AND A LOTTA THAT

    WE ALL THINK THAT

    YOU'RE REAL NEAT

    SO COME ON NOW

    AND DO THE CHICKY-CHICKY BEAT!

Then the kid has two bars of "Chicky, chicky, chicky, chicky-beat!" to just kind of do a funny little dance or whatever.  It's a little more silly, and my five-year-old and his classmates love any opportunity they can get to be silly.
