1. You have:

www.movielens.org - it's free, no ads. you can tick off movies you've seen. quite good recommendation algorithm.

movies.yahoo.com - you can tick off movies you've seen. also movies.yahoo.com/recommendations works fairly ok.

movies.msn.com - shows recommendations, very few but very similar movies. you can't tick off movies you've seen.

flixster - you can tick off movies you've seen. but recommendation is based on user input. very bad recommendation system. also worth noting it's more of a social site rather than a database.

imdb.com - great database, all the movies you can possible see exist here. unfortunately the recommendation is infamously bad.

allmovie.com - has spot on recommendations. no user input though.

You also have: fandango.com, movies.2donext.com, www.hollywoodvideo.com, www.sourcelight.com (funny looking startpage, but once you find your way to rate and recommend section it's pretty intuitive.)

I personally have my own database, which makes it easy to break down the data i insert. i can see how i rate by year, genre etc.
