Is there a species of poisonous caterpillars in Ontario?

I came across a large green one several years ago and was told by a neighbour that it was poisonous. I put it carefully into a jar and a while later it morphed into a large black moth.

  1. Many caterpillars are poisonous (like the monarch), if you eat them. They don't have another way of poisoning. As such, it would have made no deference if it was poisonous or not and a caterpillar cannot be identified by just that (Ontario is rather large).
