Hi I'm getting a laptop and I wanted a Router so that I am able to have internet connection all around my house. I have the Westell modem 6100 from verizon DSL. I've come to see these routers at dell http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?s=gen&c=us&l=en&cs=&k=Routers&cat=all but I don't know if I need a specific one from verizon in order to continue having internet on my desktop and laptop at home.

Do I need a specific one from verizon? Is there such thing as getting one modem that will work for both lap top and desktop internet from verizon? What would you recommend me getting?

Please site examples...thanks for your help =]

  1. For routing u need own network. Routers comes in thousands of dollars.

Broadband service provider allots u a ADSL2+ router as host connection on its network is enough for ur laptop or computer.

U needed Wireless Access point of Cisco or Lynksys with secured password WEP setup so only u and ur own will have this internet access. This all setup must done with help of ur computer hardware engg and service provider.

  2. get a linksys wrt54g

  3. I've been hooking up home routers for years for people, and have had very good luck with the Linksys brand, specifically WRT54G  which is one of the most popular routers for 802.11G wireless.

The router supports both 802.11B and G so it should work with most anything, however it won't work with the new line of Draft-N wireless.  Unless you specifically bought 802.11N capability, you probably didn't get it with your new laptop, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Setting up the router is pretty simple and there are instructions along with it.  Here are the basics of hooking it up:

    1) Power off the router and your DSL Modem

    2) Plug the ethernet cable (looks like a phone cable) that usually goes to our PC into the "Internet" or "WAN" port on your new router.

    3)  Power on the DSL Modem and THEN the Router.

    4)  Plug your laptop directly into the router to set any configurations or follow the directions that came with the router.

That should get you online  I recommend Linksys, but pretty much any brand will have the same feature set and be as easy to use.
