Is there a standard protocal for proving a thesis in scientific theory?

I vaguely remember this from when I was in school many many years ago, but I cant seem to remember it.

  1. Well you never really completely PROVE it, but you try to prove it beyond a reasonable doubt.  You think of every possible thing that could prove your hypothesis wrong, and you do experiments to test them.  If you are unable to prove it wrong, then you can be reasonably confident that you're right.


  2. You do it backwards. What you do is DISprove all the alternative hypotheses.
