Newbie in the crochet world. I don't read patterns very well but I can look at a pic of something and build something pretty similar. Is there a stitch that is used for sleeve cuffs or other areas were a snug but stretchable fit is desired?

  1. If you want a lacy pattern you can do a chain stitch in multiples of 5 and work in rows joining with a single crochet in the 3rd stitch of the previous chain then chaining 5 and joining in the 3rd stitch of the next chain, etc......

  2. Try single crochet using the back of the stitch only.  Chain one and turn at the end of the row, continue single crochet in back of the stitch (not both loops) only.  This will create a rib effect.  Try a swatch first for practice before putting it on your project.  Hope this helps.

  3. I really like this ribbing (crochet in post method) over the crochet in back loop. It seems more sturdy. Here is a sample pattern with picture. I made this set for my nephew.

  4. You could also try crocheting ribbing for the cuffs. this is done by alternating front post double crochet and back post double crochet and this will give a stretch to the cuffs. you can also use this around the bottom of a sweater.

  5. I agree with KohKoh. For a wider rib use a half double crochet in the back loop only and chain two at the end of the row. I personally think it looks a little nicer, but the single crochet makes a stretchier band. It all depends on the look you want. Also, you would have to crochet separate bands and then attach them to the bottoms of your sleeves, so that the ribs are vertical.
