Question:

Is there a substitute for graphite spray for keyholes?

I have used graphite spray to lube up the keyhole on deadbolts and other locks before but is there a substitute that would work that is cheaper or easier to attain? Would a normal number 2 pencil work if the graphite in that was crushed up and blown in the keyhole?

  1. The pencil will work. Do not use a liquid or spray, they cause the dirt to form mud in the lock.

  2. Silicone spray will also work. Stay away from WD-40 and any other petrol based sprays it will collect dirt and ruin your locks.

  3. WD40

  4. WD40 even though everyone hates it.

I have never had a problem with it.

  5. use a pencil... its the same thing. works on creaky doors too.

  6. There is a new product on the market called JIG-A-LOO

Jig-A-Loo is a new product that combines the power of a lubricant with the properties of a water-repellent.

It’s a dry silicone-based lubricant that, unlike other lubricants,it contains no oil, grease, wax, petroleum distillates or detergent, so it doesn't stain or stink. It stops squeaks, un-sticks just about anything, protects against rust, and is an exceptional water repellent.

JIG-A-LOO is ideal for wood, metal, glass, rubber, leather, fabrics, most plastics and a number of other surfaces, helping just about anything operate and slide better

Your hardware store may carry it.

Here is a web site to check it out.
