I'm sorry, but I wouldn't know since I don't live in an area where hurricanes occur! Thanks in advance!

  1. Sure - watch is issued when there is a fair chance the hurricane will strike in the area.  Warning is when action should be taken to avoid the full force of the winds.  Depending on the location, covering windows, stocking water and supplies, evacuation occurs at the transition, partly depending on past experience in the area.

  2. A hurricane watch is when conditions of a hurricane forming are good and the chance of a hurricane forming is high. A hurricane warning is when a hurricane has formed and is coming your way.

  3. Yes there is.  A "Watch" means there is a chance it may come your way.  A "Warning" means get prepared....it IS coming.  We get all kinds of watches and warnings on our NOAA Weather Radio.  They include Flash Floods, Tornadoes, all kinds of severe weather.  When we get a Watch an alarm goes off and the message is on a screen and it also "talks to you."  Same for warnings.  Sometimes here in the Central Texas Hill Country the NOAA Radio is quite busy.

  4. yes i live in florida hurricane central...the watch is when the hurricane is coming and the weather people are watching its movments...and a warning is when it is around where you are and it is close and comin torwds you...

  5. In terms of weather watches/warnings, hurricanes differ from other storms due to the fact that hurricane forecasting has many factors which are predicted by probability...such as the weakening of a air mass. With this being said, Hurricane predictions have a cone of Uncertainty.

A "Hurricane watch" is issued when forecasters/computer models think an area "might" have hurricane force winds within 36 hours.

A "Hurricane Warning" is issued when they are almost certain that winds of at least 74mph are expected within 24 hours or less.

The cone of Uncertainty is the amount of error possible in their forecast which is updated around every 8 hours till it gets closer to land fall. Just because it is predicted to go one way one day, does not mean that is its final path.

  6. a hurricane watch is when its forming and they watch it progress and a warning is when the hurricane has progressed and is supposed to hit your area.
