  1. there is such a thing as an unorthodox stance, but when i think of that, i think of the way briny baird putts, thats unorthodox, having your feet wider apart isn't unorthodox, but, i will say, you should probobly try to get the shoulder width apart, too far apart is not a good thing.

  2. If it works for you then go with it.

  3. It's only really wrong if it doesn't work consistently for you. If you're just starting out, you should consider a lesson or at least get some pointers from a friend who has played for a while.

  4. You might want to narrow your stance a bit. A wider stance will give you more stability but it will take away some distance. Try it at the driving range and see what works best for you. As you get better you will want to see the distance, but for now you should consentrate on accuracy. Focus on hitting them straight and the distance should come.

  5. There is really no way to know for sure without seeing your swing.

However, there are two types of golf swings and one uses a slightly wider stance than the other.  If your posture at address is fairly erect, then your feet should be no more than shoulder width, or possibly **barely** wider than shoulder-wdith.  If your posture at address is a little more bent over, try a slightly-wider-than-shoulder-width stance.

If your feet are definitely wider than a little more than shoulder-width, then it is likely that they are too wide.

  6. There are plenty of golfers out there that have a swing that is not the prototypical swing, yet they get just as good of results. Interesting enough is that the key to great results on the golf course is in your hips and legs. Getting the proper rotation, keeping your base steady! I'd suggest getting a lesson or two just so that you don't form bad habits that are hard to get rid of. Good Luck, you'll find golf mentally and physically challenging, yet it'll keep you coming back for more!

  7. If your stance  is wider than those you see other players use, do you feel that your swing is restricted? Shouldn't ask that question since you are a beginner. I would suggest that you take some lessons from a golf professional so that you learn the game properly. Ask others who they would recommend. Then invest a few dollars . You will learn to swing properly, understand when you do something wrong  and enjoy the results of your efforts.

  8. Actually, most amateur's stances are too wide. That prevents the hips from rotating back some in the backswing and creating the tension that releases on the downswing as a power producer.  Rule of thumb.....Driver, feet just outside of shoulders. Other clubs, feet below shoulders. Wedges, feet just inside of shoulders.

  9. With a five iron your feet should be shoulder width.  As you use longer clubs your stance should widen, and with shorter clubs your stance should be narrower.  Many golfers have a stance that is too narrow which makes it difficult to keep good balance on a full (driver) swing.
