  1. ferrets are weasels.. and there's many different kind of them..

if you live in the UK there are aslo what are called 'polecats' which are where the domestic ferret comes from

  2. weasels, polecats, stoats aka ermine all resemble ferrets. they are in the same family. there is also a black-footed ferret that is endangered... or it could've been an escaped or discarded pet.

  3. Where in the world are you? The domestic ferret is the descendant of the European polecat (Mustela putorious), which is still common in the wild in many parts of Europe. In North America, there is the black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes), an entirely different species to the polecat or domestic ferret - sadly, it is a rare species, and if this is what you saw you should consider yourself lucky.

Here's an image of a polecat:

    And a black-footed ferret:

There are many other species of wild mustelid (members of the weasel family), for example stoats, mink, otters, weasels, badgers, wolverines and martens. The animal you saw may have been one of these - a description would help.

  4. Yes, there are wild ferrets, as well as wild weasels and minks which can resemble one another.  You most likely saw a weasel.

  5. Black-footed ferrets are found in the American west.  They are an endangered species that feeds almost exclusively on prairie dogs.
