Is there a such thing as “rent based on ability to pay” in Indiana?

if so how do we apply for it? we live in a section 42 community and we still struggle and at the same time there are people paying a lot less than we are. are we having to pick up the tab for the portion of rent that they don't pay? there are people there with one or two children or none at all and paying 300 something for rent and we owe 514/month in rent alone, we are a family of 4 and we struggle to come up with the monthly payments. we frequently come up short so we have to bum money from parents. our income is not high or moderate, and we have to pay higher rent. i don't think they are even making a deduction for the dependants that we have. aren't they supposed to? and by the way if income increases the rent we have to pay will go up.

  1. You are all paying the same rent.   You ARE in the "ability to pay" housing.    Some people pay less because they have less money then you do.

You are spending lots of energy worrying about people paying less rent then you are.    You could use that same energy to get a better job and move your kids into a decent neighborhood.

  2. The only thing anywhere like that is Section 8 housing in Indiana. Which I believe is in every state. Guess what, it applies.....your income goes up, so does your part of the rent.

Sometimes, your landlord (if he/she is a private individual and not a company) might work out a deal like that with you...but that's few and far between.

Sorry...but that is just how it works.

as far as I know, Section 8 makes no deductions for dependant children. You simply live in a place that is too expensive, you might want to think of finding a place that is cheaper...because I know that some places start as cheap as $45 a month (for thoose who are disabled/on SSI), but for most ...the cheapest is probably 100 a month on section 8. Don't quote me on that though....it's just what I know a friend of mine had to take and pay when she was on it (after an abusive boyfriend kicked her out of the house at 3am). It wasn't a great place, but it was a roof over her head. You may just need to get into an area that allows you to not have to pay so much. Section 42 sounds alot like Section 8.....I don't know if it's the same rules or not.

You just have to figure out some of this for yourself.
