Is there a super simple way to get a DVD (movie/ TV show episodes) as an MP4 format?

I would like to load it onto my iPod. I have asked this question before and every response asked me to get Cucusoft, which is like a converter to get stuff on MP4 format. Only problem is I would have to download it and I don't want to get a virus or anything. I also don't think my parents would fork out $35 for it!

I have a DVD, I have iTunes, I have an iPod Classic...shouldn't that be all you need?

Couldn't you Copy & Paste the movie from Windows Media Player (my default DVD player) onto my computer, then convert it to a MP4 and then put it in iTunes?

If not, why hasen't Apple made DVD to iPod functions possible?
